Johann Either

Ivan Either, also found in records as Johann Eyther, Ajther…

This Zagreb builder, originally from Moravia, arrived in Zagreb in 1775.

He was the leading city architect for the last two decades of the 18th century. In 1808–1809, he was entrusted with the renovation of Ban’s Court for Ban Ignac Gyulay.

He created plans for the adaptation of the Oršić house at 5 Ćirilometodska Street into the city hall.

During Emperor Franz II‘s visit to Zagreb, he designed the decorations and lighting for the Upper Town.

A series of his drawings for various buildings in Zagreb (Vojković Palace, Franciscan monastery, Jesuit college, hospital on Harmica, city poorhouse) have been preserved. They mostly represent records of the existing conditions. Ivan Either was the cousin of builder Juraj Either, with whom he shared a business. In 1795, they employed 36 assistants and 7 apprentices.

He died in Zagreb in 1822.
