Milan Lenuzzi

Milan Lenuzzi, born in Karlovac, was the most significant urban planner in Zagreb at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. He worked on the design and arrangement of parks and squares in the Lower Town, among which the well-known Green Horseshoe or Lenuci’s Horseshoe stands out.

In addition to the Horseshoe, it’s worth mentioning the redevelopment of Kaptol, Dolac Market, and Ban Jelačić Square (1893 – 1916) in the spirit of historicist urbanism.

He also worked on the urbanization of the eastern part of the city up to Maksimir Park, connecting those two areas with a wide Avenue. The General Regulatory Plan of Zagreb, which he formulated in 1907, is a synthesis of his previous urban planning and his vision of Zagreb as a modern metropolis.

Lenuci retired in 1912 and died in Zagreb in 1924. He will be remembered as the person who laid the foundations for urban Zagreb in the 20th century.
