Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb

The Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb is Croatia’s oldest and most prominent theatre institution, with opera, drama, and ballet ensembles.

The first city theatre opened in 1834, located in the present-day Old City Hall in Zagreb. It later became known as the Croatian National Theatre in 1860 and was granted government support in 1861, making it equal to other national theatres in Europe.

An opera company was added to the theatre in 1870. In 1895, the theatre moved to its current location in a new purpose-built building on the west side of Lenuci Horseshoe in Zagreb Lower Town.

The building was designed by Viennese architects Ferdinand Fellner and Herman Helmer and was unveiled by Austro-Hungarian emperor Franz Joseph I during his visit to the city in 1895.

The ceremonial stage curtain “Croatian Revival” was painted by Vlaho Bukovac.

In front of the theatre is the fountain Well of Life, created by Croatian sculptor Ivan Meštrović under the influence of Impressionism and Secession.

Historicism

Historicism is marked with building three large churches: the neo-Romanesque cathedral in Đakovo (K. Roesner and F. Schmidt, 1882), monumental parish church of St Peter and Paul in Osijek (1898) and neo-gothic rebuilding of Zagreb cathedral with glazed roof tiles and 105 m tall towers (Herman Bolle, 1880–1902). At the end of 19th century Herman Bolle undertook one of the largest projects of European historicism, a half-kilometer long neo-Renaissance arcade with twenty domes on Zagreb cemetery Mirogoj.
