Esplanade Zagreb Hotel

The Esplanade Zagreb Hotel was built in 1925 to provide luxury accommodation for passengers of the Orient Express train, which traveled between Paris and Istanbul.

In 1917, the Belle Epoque building’s construction contract was awarded to Otto Rehnig from Germany. Dionis Sunko, the Zagreb architect, modified Rehnig’s original plans. Today, most people consider Sunko as the building’s architect.

The hotel was named Esplanade, which likely means “field” due to its location on a vast plain west of the station.

The hotel was the filming site for the 1983 miniseries The Winds of War and the 1988 television film The Great Escape II: The Untold Story.

The hotel served as the filming location for The Winds of War miniseries in 1983 and The Great Escape II: The Untold Story television film in 1988.

The term was coined at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts held in Paris in 1925.
