Sculpture of St. George near Stone Gate
The monument was erected in front of the Stone Gate on November 15, 1994, at the request of the Society of Brethren of the Croatian Dragon.
The Monument of St. George, is the work of the Austrian sculptors Winder and Kompatscher from 1906.
It consists of two parts: a bronze statue of the saint. He is riding on a horse that is standing over a dead dragon carved from two pieces of red breccia stone from the island of Rab.
After the battle with the dragon, this unusual and rare depiction of St. George leaves a deep impression with his calmness.
Until 1937, the sculpture was located in Mallnitz, in Styria, when Dr. Želimir Mažuranić bought it.
The monument was placed in the villa’s yard at Jurjevska 5, on a pedestal made by Ivo Kerdić.
After Dr. Mažuranić’s death, the sculpture became the city’s property through a gift contract. In 1994, the monument was moved to its current location in front of the Stone Gate.
The monument was damaged in the summer of 2024. It was rumored that the spear had been stolen, but due to the damage, it was put away for restoration, according to the Croatian daily newspaper Jutarnji List.
