Statue of kumica (godmother) Barica on Dolac Market
In 2006, a statue of the traditional market vendor, “Kumica Barica,” was installed at Dolac Market, a work by sculptor Stjepan Gračan.
Who are the “Kumice”?
Kuma, or kumica, literally means godmother. However, it also refers to all the traditional women in the Zagreb area who grow fruit and vegetables or make homemade cheese and cream and sell it at the market. The name “Barica” was chosen by the city’s residents.
The Real Barica
The real Barica is Đurđica Jančić, the woman who has been selling her goods at the Dolac market for more than 50 years. The sculptor chose Đurđica as the most authentic woman who represents all the women who have brought fresh, healthy food to Dolac for centuries. He photographed her and used her figure to model the sculpture. You can see her in an article from the Croatian newspaper Večernji.hr.
