Feller House

The two-story residential building of Eugen Viktor and Ida Feller was built in 1903-04. The project was done by the “Hönigsberg & Deutsch” studio.

The house name is after its owner, pharmacist Eugen Viktor Feller, one of the most successful pharmacists and entrepreneurs at the turn of the century. The author of the Feller house is the architect Vinko De Luca, who worked in the studio “Hönigsberg & Deutsch “.

The Hönigsberg & Deutsch studio was founded in 1889 by renowned architects Leo Hönigsberg and Julio Deutsch. At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, the architectural studio Hönigsberg & Deutsch was one of the leading studios in Zagreb. Through their activities, Hönigsberg & Deutsch will become the most significant representatives of the late phase of Zagreb’s historicism.

The Feller house has elements of high historicist stylization. The unique facade of the Venetian Gothic and Neo-Rococo style is in the spirit of the “new freestyle” of the 1900s, with finely designed details and the highest quality craftsmanship.

Having moved to Croatia from Lviv, Feller began the production of his miracle elixir Elsa Fluid in 1897, which he named after his mother Elsa.

Feller advertised Elsa Fluid in all the leading newspapers of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy as a cure for all diseases. Eliksir treated all types of pains, colds, low back pain, headaches, toothaches, etc. Feller conquered the markets of Austria-Hungary, Germany, and other European countries, as well as Egypt, China, Japan, and America, where the elixir was well exported during the prohibition because it contained a large percentage of alcohol.

As he became rich, he built two buildings in Zagreb. On the corner of Jelačić Square and Jurišić Street, in 1906, the first four-story building in Zagreb, which was then called the Zagreb Skyscraper, and other few years before, on Tomislav Square no. 4, the family villa on two floors known as “Feller Haus”.

He moved from Donja Stubica in 1904 to a house on Tomislav Square, which he built with the idea of establishing an elite civic residence for his family in the capital, and it was also the first office of his company.

Till the end of World War I several art movements and styles coexisted in Croatia, but all avant-garde movements were absent. That is why the greatest artworks of that period were done in the spirit of 19th-century art, including the most important examples of Vienna Secession style: the Ethnographic Museum, Zagreb in 1901, Kallina House in 1903, the National Library in 1912 were built in Zagreb, while Sulphurous Bath in 1903, and the Croatian National Theatre in 1908, were built in Split.
