Grič Tunnel – An underground adventure beneath Zagreb

It connects Mesnička Street in the west and Radić Street 19 (yard entrance) in the east, where you’ll find the main entrances. It also has entrances to Ilica and Tomićeva streets in the south, but those vertical entrances/exits are not always open.

A Quick, Cool Escape

It’s about 350 meters long, and its width varies from 3.2 to 5.5 meters. You can use it as a shortcut, which takes about a 5-minute walk, or as a perfect escape from the summer heat.

A Bit of History

The tunnel was built during World War II, specifically in 1943, during the Independent State of Croatia, as an air-raid shelter from Allied bombings. It was finished in 1945, but for a long time, it didn’t really have a clear purpose. After the war, they tried to turn it into everything from a garage to an atomic shelter, but none of those ideas stuck. During the Croatian War of Independence, it served as a shelter for citizens and a venue for cultural events.

The Tunnel Today

In 2016, it was opened to the public and became a popular tourist attraction. Today, you can stroll through the tunnel, soak in its history, and enjoy a unique experience.

Fun Facts

• In the 1990s, it hosted one of the first rave parties in Croatia,
• It was supposed to become a “Museum of Touch,” but the realization of the idea never came out.
• The tunnel hosts various events, like exhibitions and concerts.
