Bauda House in Zagreb

The architectural solution was made by Aladar Baranyai for the company Pilar-Mally-Bauda. The exterior of the house is clearly inspired by the contemporary projects of the “new free style” of Joseph Marie Olbrich.

The Bauda House is the last work of Aladar Baranyai for the construction company Pilar-Mally-Bauda.

The exterior of the Bauda house is a unique example of imaginative figural facade ornamentation and emphasized three-dimensionality. It is possible to see an influence of the contemporary architectural style of Joseph Marie Olbrich and his ‘new freestyle’ projects – the reference is Olbrich’s Sezession in Vienna.

Sezession is the name for several groups of progressive artists that broke away from established and conservative artists’ organizations in Austria and Germany.

The house also stands out for the simple solution of the residential units, which have optimal natural light, and it is easy to the ventilate all rooms.

The Bauda house surpasses later standards in the block-type, connected housing construction style defined around 1910, known as the “Zagreb floor plan”.

Secession

Till the end of World War I several art movements and styles coexisted in Croatia, but all avant-garde movements were absent. That is why the greatest artworks of that period were done in the spirit of 19th-century art, including the most important examples of Vienna Secession style: the Ethnographic Museum, Zagreb in 1901, Kallina House in 1903, the National Library in 1912 were built in Zagreb, while Sulphurous Bath in 1903, and the Croatian National Theatre in 1908, were built in Split.
