Tower Brgud

The cylindric defence tower near the village Brgud is situated on a natural elevation northwest of the village.

The tower is well preserved and built with the cut layered stone bound with malter. The diameter of the tower in the layout is 7,8 meters, the width of the wall is 1,45 m, and the highest preserved point is 11,32m. The tower has a circular base with two floors and a half floor that served for the guard patrol.

The entrance is on the first floor on the west side and the tower was entered by the wooden staircase from the outside that could be removed in case of an emergency.

There is a window on the second floor that served for controlling the road that passed below the hill and the remains are still visible in the karst. There are two smaller windows on the second floor that served as loopholes.

The third floor was used for the guard patrol. There are still visible wall openings, that were used as loopholes, too.

One interesting detail about the tower in Brgud is the natural cave right below it. In its highest part, the cave is as high as a grown-up and it could efficiently serve for defence purposes, as a shelter or a storage place for food and munition.

Location

Benkovac

The first traces of human life in the Benkovac area were found around the village of Smilčić that belonged to the Danilo culture. Before Roman conquest the area was inhabited by the Illyrian tribe of Liburnians. During the Roman Civil war the Liburnians sided with Caesar. The Romans mention the following Liburnian settlements: Nedinum (Nadin), Carinium (Karin), Varvaria (Bribir) and Asseria (Podgrađe). In 7th century the area was settled by Croats. The area of Benkovac was at the crossroads of four Croatian župas – Novljanska, Sidraška, Bribirska and Karinska. Near the village of Šopot, an inscription from the 9th century was found that mentions Branimir as a Croatian Duke.
