The Nama building in Ilica

The Nama building, at the beginning of Ilica Street, used to be known as the Kastner & Öhler building is the oldest department store in Zagreb. Originally built as the hotel “To the Austrian Emperor” at Ilica Street 4, it was adapted for Viennese merchants Carl Kastner and Herman Öhler between 1913-15 and 1926-1928.

Architect Ignjat Fischer oversaw the project and blended traditional elements with art-deco styling. Viennese architect Alfred Keller designed the building’s impressive facade.

The story behind the Nama building dates back to the late 19th century when the well-known trading company, Kastner and Ohler, came to Zagreb. In 1879, they became interested in opening a trading house in Zagreb to expand their business further after owning a large trading house in Vienna.

During the 1881., they opened their first trading house in Mesnička Street, followed by another in Ilica Street 16. And finally in 1882. they launched a store in Ilica 4, which is still known among the locals as “Nama in Ilica Street”.

After World War II in 1945, the department store became the property of the trade labor organization “NArodni MAgazin,” shortly NAMA. During the renovation, the department store was expanded to the neighbors’ buildings.

Despite numerous reconstructions, the Nama building remains a significant work of architecture. It is one of the buildings that identify Ilica Street as the most famous shopping street in the center of Zagreb.

Art déco

Art Deco was a style that emerged in Europe and the USA from 1920 to 1930. It was a continuation of Vienna Secession and was named after the French term ‘art dècoratif’ which means decorative art. The term was coined at the International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts held in Paris in 1925. Art Deco drew inspiration from Art Nouveau and the Wiener Werkstätte, and it influenced all areas of artistic life.
