The Katine Bridge: A Venetian Bridge Reborn in 2011

Although the current bridge looks genuinely old, it is actually a slightly modified replica dating from 2011. The original Venetian bridge was built in 1737 based on the designs of the famous Venetian architect, Giambattista Lodoli. This modern replica replaced a modest concrete bridge from the early 20th century.

Strategic Center of the Town

The Katine area was historically vital. The name “Katine” (meaning “chain”) originates from the chain that was once stretched from one shore of the isthmus to the other. This chain served as a defense mechanism, physically preventing ships from entering the inner, protected section of Pag Bay.

This area also held the town’s largest gates: the Porta Marina (Sea Gate). The preserved lintel of Duke Nikola Tiepolo from this gate remains a historical testament to the town’s power and defense.

The bridge is a perfect example of Pag’s Renaissance urban planning. It is precisely at this point that the main street (gradski dekuman) continues across the cove, connecting the heart of the town center to the opposite shore.

Across the town center in the Prosika area are the Salt Magazines (warehouses), the first three of which were built as early as the 17th century. The saltworks were Pag’s main economic branch, and the Venetian Republic had a massive strategic interest in controlling this trade.

Beyond its historical and economic role, Prosika is also known today for having the largest sandy beach immediately near the old town center, giving the Katine Bridge a modern, tourist function.
