Monument to Juraj Dalmatinac in Pag
The monument to Juraj Dalmatinac was unveiled on the main town square in Pag on September 25, 1975, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the celebrated architect’s death.
The statue of Juraj Dalmatinac (George the Dalmatian) known also as Giorgio da Sebenico (George of Sebenico) and Giorgio Orsini is the work of local sculptor Ivan Mirković, who dedicated it to the famous builder as a sign of gratitude and pride for his significant contributions to the construction of “New Pag.”
Since its unveiling, the monument has changed locations several times. Today, it stands on the waterfront promenade next to the City Hall.
About the Sculptor
Ivan Mirković hailed from the distinguished Croatian noble Mirković family of Pag Island.
He received his first painting lessons from Emanuel Vidović before continuing his education at the Art Academy in Prague, where he graduated and socialized with Ivo Režek. In addition to Vidović, Mirković also gained knowledge and experience from prominent artists like Vlaho Bukovac and Ivan Meštrović.
Two of his sculptures are installed in his native Pag: the monuments to Juraj Dalmatinac and Bartol Kašić.
