Fort Perušić in Perušić Benkovački
The remains of the ruined fort are located on a hill above Perušić, and there you can enjoy a beautiful view of the surroundings.
The fort, or what’s left of it, is located in Perusic. Unfortunately, its today’s appearance is not worthy of its size. It is worth it to climb to the top because of the beautiful view of the surrounding area.
It is mentioned for the first time in the documents in 1449 and it is presumably built in the 14th or 15th century. Its original appearance was preserved until 1944 when it was demolished. Only the remains of the outside wall are still visible.
The Ottomans conquered it in 1523 after the Bosnian Sanjak-bey Gazi-Husein-bey conquered the nearby Ostrovica for Suleiman the Magnificent. Thanks to the fact that it wasn’t defended, it wasn’t demolished, just like the surrounding churches.
The fort was under the Ottoman administration until 1647 when it had to be abandoned during the Candian War.
Location
Benkovac
The first traces of human life in the Benkovac area were found around the village of Smilčić that belonged to the Danilo culture. Before Roman conquest the area was inhabited by the Illyrian tribe of Liburnians. During the Roman Civil war the Liburnians sided with Caesar. The Romans mention the following Liburnian settlements: Nedinum (Nadin), Carinium (Karin), Varvaria (Bribir) and Asseria (Podgrađe). In 7th century the area was settled by Croats. The area of Benkovac was at the crossroads of four Croatian župas – Novljanska, Sidraška, Bribirska and Karinska. Near the village of Šopot, an inscription from the 9th century was found that mentions Branimir as a Croatian Duke.
