Skrivanat Tower in the City of Pag
The Skrivanat Tower is the last remaining of what were once nine towers that, along with massive walls, protected and defended the city of Pag for centuries.
This historical beauty dates back to the 15th century, with its construction completed in 1468, as evidenced by an inscription with the coat of arms of Duke Toma Zorzi. Today, the Skrivanat Tower represents the best-preserved remnant of Pag’s defensive system, maintained in its original form.
“New Pag,” a unique example of Renaissance urban planning, was encircled by walls and towers that were, sadly, almost completely torn down during the 19th century. Historically, the people of Pag fought for their survival, and these towers were crucial in defending the city from numerous threats.
The city of Pag also had several gates. The largest was the Porta Marina, located in the Katine area, where the lintel with Duke Nikola Tiepolo’s coat of arms has been preserved. The smaller gate, the “Mala Vrata,” was to the south of it.
Today, a scenic promenade runs alongside the Skrivanat Tower, making it a perfect spot to enjoy the view and soak in the historical atmosphere. But the tower is more than just a silent witness to the past; it’s a vibrant cultural hub. During the summer months, its interior and surrounding area come alive with various cultural and entertainment events. You can enjoy performances by klapa groups and choirs, theater productions, or participate in summer workshops.
Location
Renaissance
In the 15th century, Croatia was divided between three states – northern Croatia was a part of the Austrian Empire, Dalmatia was under the rule of the Venetian Republic (with the exception of Dubrovnik), and Slavonia was under Ottoman occupation. Dalmatia was on the periphery of several influences, equidistant from Italy, Ottoman Bosnia, and Austria, so it drew influence from all. In those circumstances in Dalmatia flourished religious and public architecture with clear influences of the Italian Renaissance, but still original.
